The Walt Disney World® attraction designers have outdone themselves this time. The new Pandora – World of Avatar area brings the movie to life and immerses you in the alien world. The 12-acre area that replicates environments seen in the renowned film opens May 27, 2017 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom®. This grand production has cost upwards of $500,000,000 to create.
The centerpiece attraction and 3-dimensional simulator ride is Flight of Passage, which takes riders through the cinematic world of Avatar. Riders don a pair of special glasses and sit on something that resembles a motorcycle. At that point, you are strapped in and off for the ride of your life. You’ll fly on the back of the giant winged banshee as you soar through the skies of Pandora. You’ll see moonlit skies, massive waterfalls, and crashing waves from the ocean.
The lengthy, 5-minute ride provides an experience that excites all the senses. Air blasts at you, mist sprays your face, and scents of pleasant woody aroma welcome you as you fly through the lush forests. This is truly an experience like no other.
Joe Rhode, who is the production leader on Pandora – World of Avatar, tells us that the land and scenery are the main focal points of the action. He says, “The character is being portrayed and played by the place itself, and that is different than a set.”
