Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Orlando

This autumn, celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Orlando. Each year cities across America hold events that share the diverse stories and recognize the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans, and Orlando is no exception. It’s the perfect time for those of Hispanic heritage to honor their history and for all to explore the stories and traditions of Hispanic cultures.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a way to honor and celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of those with Hispanic heritage. The month-long holiday runs from September 15 to October 15, which includes the Independence Day celebrations for many Central and South American countries.

Ways to Celebrate in Orlando

Start the party with the Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff on September 12. Held at the Harry P. Leu Gardens, this free event hosted by the City of Orlando includes Latin folkloric dances, food, and the grand opening of the Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibit. The exhibit will showcase artwork by Central Florida Hispanic artists.

If you enjoy music, there are several concerts taking place during the month. Join Grammy®-winning Colombian signer Carlos Vives on September 14 at the Amway Center as he shares songs from his latest album, Vives. Then, on October 11, enjoy music by Puerto Rican artist Chayanne as he sweeps you off your feet with his romantic rhythms. Feel like dancing? Catch local musicians at the Orlando Public Library on September 30, as they play salsa, merengue, and much more.

Local libraries also offer special movie screenings and other cultural events. Past events have included art shows, dance workshops, and interviews with authors. You can also browse a selection of literature for all ages by Hispanic authors as well as a selection of bilingual books.

Of course, the tastiest way is to celebrate with food. Some Orlando restaurants offer special menus and discounts in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Tapa Toro on International Drive is offering a specialty menu from September 1 – to October 15th with both lunch and dinner options. Located next to ICON Orlando and other I-Drive attractions, it’s perfect for a romantic night out.
