As an art connoisseur visiting Orlando, you’ll want to include a trip to the Orlando Museum of Art to enjoy its collection of ancient and contemporary art. If your visit happens to coincide with the first Thursday of the month, then consider yourself especially lucky. Every first Thursday of each month, Orlando Museum of Art hosts 1st Thursdays, a special event where you can enjoy the work of established and emerging local artists as well as the museum exhibit. Dubbed “Orlando’s Original Art Party,” 1st Thursdays is the ideal place to get an early start to your weekend as you mix and mingle with Orlando artists.
Feast on Art
At 1st Thursdays you’ll feed your soul and your stomach. Not only will you be treated to the talents of local artists, you’ll also enjoy the culinary creations of local chefs. Make sure to bring a little extra cash so you can sample their work as there will be stations with select offerings from some of Orlando’s most popular restaurants. Pair your meal with wine, beer, or soft drinks from the bar.
Discover Orlando’s Art & Architecture
No matter how many times you attend 1st Thursdays you’ll always enjoy something new. The theme for each exhibition changes monthly and ranges from selfies to science. June’s theme is Art and Architecture and focuses on how art shapes and brings beauty to the built world. You can expect to enjoy a variety of media each month, including photography, 3D models, poetry, and video.
Enjoy Museum Exhibits
Your admission to 1st Thursdays also includes access to the museum’s featured exhibits. There are currently two visiting exhibits on display at the museum. Enjoy Seminole art in Enduring Beauty: Seminole Art & Culture. The display showcases art from the 19th – 20th centuries and includes jewelry, baskets, and beaded clothing.
On June 1, the Orlando Museum of Art Florida Prize in Contemporary Art Exhibit will open. This exhibit features creations by some of the most progressive artists currently working in Florida. The artists – all of whom boast several awards and recognition – will showcase work that includes painting, photography, video, and performance.
Your art adventure can continue even after your visit to 1st Thursdays. You’ll find galleries and art festivals across Central Florida, as well as sculptures in public areas such as Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. Rosen Inn’s convenient central location makes it easy to enjoy art at the Orlando Museum of Art and beyond. Just hop on the nearby ramp for Interstate 4 and begin exploring.
