For Harry Potter fans in Orlando and all around the world, a trip to Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWoHP) is a must-do. Fans of the book and movie series have been wowed by the immersive experience that first opened in 2010, and more recently with its Diagon Alley expansion in 2014.
With the opening of Diagon Alley, nestled inside Islands of Adventure, guests can travel between the two areas via a recreation of the Hogwarts Express – as long as you have a park-to-park ticket.
The popularity of the Harry Potter series combined with the summer crowds can make it challenging to see everything. The following tips will help you navigate the crowds with ease.
Arrive Early
The Harry Potter attractions are among the most popular in the entire park, so try to be there when it opens. Make your way to the most popular rides first – Escape from Gringotts and Forbidden Journey –before the lines begin to increase.
Enjoy More than Just the Rides
Of course, rides are one of the primary reasons people come to theme parks, but the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is an immersive experience. The smallest details from the movies have been faithfully recreated including:
- A functional Platform 9 ¾ – Taking the Hogwarts Express from King’s Cross Station involves one of the most impressive special effects in the whole park. As you approach the tunnel to enter the train, you’ll notice that those ahead of you in line will appear to pass through a solid brick wall, just like in the movies.
- A magical phone booth outside King’s Cross – The iconic red phone box outside of the train station makes a great place to stop for a photo, but few realize that the phone inside actually works. Dialing MAGIC (62442) puts you through directly to the Ministry of Magic.
Buying a Wand
There simply is no better souvenir than your very own wand, and the recreated Hogsmeade village comes complete with its own Ollivander’s wand shop. Unfortunately, there is often a long line just to get in the store thanks to the live performance that goes on inside, but don’t fret. There are carts outside of Hogwarts Castle and in Diagon Alley where you can purchase wands as well.
Stay Until Nighttime
During the busy season, Universal and Islands of Adventure™ will stay open later, and the whole atmosphere of WWoHP changes. As the sun sets, the lights inside the shops and castle help the village come alive and feel like the real thing. As an added bonus, the wait times tend to be significantly lower within a couple of hours of the parks closing.
